The Simon Fraser Student Society is seeking applicants for the permanent position of the Out on Campus Coordinator. Out on Campus is Simon Fraser UniversityÕs Queer (GBLT*) Centre, operated by the Out on Campus Collective and funded by the Simon Fraser Student Society. This position is a permanent position, and the employee will be a member of CUPE Local 2396.
Applicants must demonstrate experience with peer support, as well as skills and experience in project and volunteer coordination, volunteer recruitment, with the ability to administer a Queer center with +900 titles in its resource library. Also, experience in a consensus decision-making model is an asset.
The position is 28hr/week. The pay rate is 25.69/hr with a periodic COLA adjustment, and comes with a full benefit package. The deadline for applications is Thursday, April 6 at 11:00pm. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

JOB DESCRIPTION and REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinate projects, programs, services and other vents of benefit to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students and their allies at Simon Fraser University.
Engage in volunteer recruitment, training development and delivery as well as ongoing support.
Provide peer support and crisis referrals.
Administer the Out on Campus area, including but not limited to the resource center and lounge.
Assist in advertising and promoting the services provided by the Out on Campus area.
Organize and resource Out on Campus collective meetings.
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of campus and off-campus resources for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students and their allies at Simon Fraser University.
Maintain files, databases, administrative systems, supplies and equipment.
Prepare the annual budget for submission for the Out on Campus area for consideration by the Out on Campus Collective and the Finance and Administrative Services Committee.

Required Skills and Experience:

Experience with issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered students in an academic institutional environment.
Ability and experience in volunteer recruitment training and support.
Ability and experience working with lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered persons in crisis situations.
Ability to work within a collective structure, using consensus decision-making.
Ability to work in a self-supervisory, multi-task environment, within clear timelines.
Strong Interpersonal skills.
Ability, training and experience in conflict resolution.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Administrative ability and experience.
Computing skills (Mac environment) including: word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
Knowledge of post-secondary student organizations structure and mandate.
Understanding of the role of the Student Society or its membership, in terms of advocacy, representation, and the provision of services.

Anti-Racism Workshops

You are invited to attend a three part series of Anti-Racism workshops.
These interactive workshops will explore racism and several themes including
colonization, migration, media representations, intersecting
identities, white supremacy and anti-racism within organizations.
People are encouraged to attend the full series of three workshops, though
each workshop is self-contained and can be attended individually.
The workshops will take place on three consecutive Thursday afternoons from
2:30-5:30pm. They are free of charge and will include snacks and
beverages.
Racism and Colonization

Clubs days: Not so good. Second day there was no table. Lots of people
signed up, no one showed up.
Queer Awareness Week: Lots of ideas. Jeff has followed up on his stuff.
New Idea and tentative plan: Donations from Queer Awareness Fundraiser used
to develop queer content at Spartacus Bookstore. The event/party will be in
association with Bent, the new Alternative Queer party in Vancouver. Not at
Lick (too small) maybe Anza Club or somewhere else. Collective twinkled on
following up with this idea.
T-Shirt Committee: Need an artist or graphic artist to make a design.
Volunteers?
Secret Friends: Secret Graveyard? Jeff got some shoeboxes, we will get it
started soon.
Yoga: Will start next Tuesday. Look for an email with more info.
The Space: Full of random boxes, yucky food and dishes. If you see someone
making a mess, tell them to clean it up. Take out the garbage, clean up
after yourself, etc.
CJSF: We’ve agreed to participate in the Rotunda Radio Show. OOC will have
a show every three weeks or so. If you want to be involved, you need to do
a CJSF orientation. There are CJSF volunteer orientations at the station on
the following dates:
Jan 27th at 3:00pm and 6:15pm
Feb 3rd at 6:15pm
Feb 10th at 3:00pm
Feb 18th at 4:40pm
Feb 21st at 4:00pm
Porn on the Computer: There was misogynist and unacceptable porn on the
desktop of the office computer. This will not be tolerated. It is a
violation of the Union standards for Jeff. We have to be very careful about
what you’re looking at in the space and DON’T LEAVE PORN ON THE DESKTOP.
After Hours: Trying to get it together. Maybe we should steal the name
“after hours” and apply it to the pub night that’s trying to get started for
now. More info to come.
Peer Support: 2 final training sessions with FOOD:
Jan 26th, 4:30 to 7:30 (let Jeff know if you’ll be at this one)
Feb 1st, 4:30 to 7:30.
If you can’t make these times, arrange a time to meet with Jeff for
individually.
Queer Faculty Dinner: Feb 8th What’s going on? No one knows.

Out On Campus has agreed to participate in a rotating CJSF radio show with the other rotunda groups, which is tentatively called "Rotunda Radio".
The idea is that every 2nd or 3rd week Out On Campus will have an opportunity to discuss queer issues, news, and events on CJSF. Now, what we need is volunteers to make it happen.
To volunteer, what you need to do is a volunteer orientation during one of these times.

Collective Meeting Minutes November 29th

Collective Minutes.
November 29th, 2005

Present: Erin, Erica, Monica, Jeff, Wynde, Terry, Jenn, Bobae, Mallory, Veronique, Andrea, Eric and a bunch of other people who came in later.

1. Rounds: Why we love Sharky.
2. Committee updates:
-Website - are working on it: design stuff, resource links, and OOC info. Stay tuned.
-T-shirt – no longer waiting for other groups to do shirt order with. Wanli has agreed to work on the design.
-Secret Friends – NOT HAPPENING THIS SEMESTER. (Obviously.) …but Jeff has been able to scrounge a few shoe boxes and will try to get more. Everyone who wants to participate bring more boxes.
3. CJSF: Rotunda radio show. Everyone who wants to participate on the OOC Radio Show, get training ASAP. Our show will happen once a month. Jeff will be responsible for coordinating it, but is not responsible for everything. Allow me to reiterate myself: Jeff is not responsible for the whole thing. Everyone is welcome to join.
4. Montreal Massacre Memorial: Important that we all participate. We’ve twinkled on (up to) $100 to be donated to the Women’s Center to help pay for the hot chocolate for the event.
5. Book buy: December 02 (this Friday). Meet at 3pm at Little Sisters. They’ve agreed to give us 10% off. RSVP. We have a whole butt load of suggestions, but only two or three book requests, the rest are DVD. Jeff has suggested a limit on the amount of DVDs we buy. We’re lacking resources on several issues, so we should work on that such as positive relationships, recent HIV information, coming out, etc. After the Book Buy is the Volunteer appreciation party! RSVP!
6. CLEAN UP YOUR MESS. ..Jeff is very disappointed in those patrons of the Space who have not been too good with cleaning up the messes they’ve made. (Including those of us *cough* who have been playing One Thousand Blank White Cards) The old food has become quite the biohazard. A safe space is a clean space guys. It was suggested that at the end of the day, if you’re here please help to clean up the space so Jeff doesn’t have to spend the first fifteen minutes of his day cleaning. Volunteers are encouraged to help clean up (or make other people clean up.. nicely)during their office hours.
7. Spring 2006 Programming: (these are just some bits and pieces of what we talked about)
-Most of the training should be done in January (earlier workshops are much better)
-New programs will be more challenging and fun.
-E-mail Erica (moocow) regarding After Hours.
-Having After Hours once a month might be a better idea.
-Andrea is thinking of starting a yoga class and everyone cheered! She will rent a space on campus through OOC. She is also thinking of starting a spiritual discussion group. STAY TUNED!
-Jeff wants to so a coming out discussion group at least once a month.
8. Peer Support Training: 4:30- 6:30 this Thursday
-More skills based and personal care
-How is peer support different than counseling?
-Jeff worked super hard on the package and they are exciting and informative!
(the PST actually happened this afternoon and was a success! Jeff indeed did a great job on the package!)
9. BAD BAD BAD BAD NEWS!! The button maker costs 900 bucks! CRAZY!
-Jeff will not give up yet. He will use whatever we have left in our budget this semester and will find a cheaper kick ass button maker.
10. HCCC has asked Jeff to do a queer awareness workshop with them! Yay!

3) The Good, the Bad, and the Femme

Burlesque group Stilettos & Strap On. Kate was here to speak for us. This is a fundraiser for the “Little Sisters Legal Defense Fund”. Collective decided to donate $150 to the group from the honoraria budget. The cheque will be made out to Kate.

4) Book Buy

The Book Buy (!) will be Friday, December 2nd at 3PM. We will meet at Little Sisters.
To participate in The Book Buy (!) you will need to be a current OOC member. You will need to RSVP to Jeff if you want to participate, and collective decided to cap the book buy group to 15 to keep it manageable. Request for books will need to be in by December 1st. Requests can be sent to Jeff/ooc-info, put in the big gay book request box, or put up on The Book Buy request poster Mike plans on making. Jeff will get the cheque cut for the book buy in the amount of $1, 385. We will purchase the books with his debit card.

So far…Wanli, Veronique, Wynde, and Jeff are attending.

7) Conference

Jeff wants to attend the 2006 Canadian University Queer Services Conference in Ottawa. Issues such as funding, marketing, volunteer management, increased campus presence, and community development will be explored. Jeff has forwarded the request to the SFSS.

8) Jeff Is On Vacation

Jeff is on vacation from December 13th to December 20th. It’s a free for all at OOC.

9) Volunteer Party

Our VOLUNTEER PARTY is December 2nd after our book buy! We are going bowling at Granville Lanes! The volunteer party is RSVP, because Jeff will need to know how many people to pay for! We may go out for dinner first! After….dance, dance, dance party! Somewhere (to be discussed)!

10) Pub Night!

OOC is taking over Pub Night on November 24th! We will all meet there, and have fun! Bring your own money for beer.

11) Button Maker

OOC wants its own button maker. We will use our equipment budget to do this, to a total of $256 dollars. Jeff will look for a good, sturdy, sexy button maker!

12) Living Positive Magazine

BCPWA magazine subscription is due. It is by donation (25 minimum) and collective decided that we will donate $50 from our honoraria budget!

Halloween Party – It happened, yay!

T-Shirts – the t-shirt design is in the workings.

Pub Night – this committee is hibernating while term papers, etc, happen.

2. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY

Collective brainstormed possible party activites. It was decided that the
party will happen on Friday December 2, 2005 in the evening. The event will
most likely involve bowling, and possibly a karaoke outing later on in the
evening. More ‘deets’ to come.

3. TDOR – Vancouver Transgender Day of Remembrance

The space at Harbour Centre has been booked.
We need people to POSTER and HAND OUT HANDBILLS. :)
Jeff has asked the organizers of the event if they need volunteer support
and is awaiting a response.
There will be a vigil for the Trans Day of Remembrance next week organized
by Wynde and Jeff. Jeff will ask the Women’s Centre if they are interested
in partaking.

4. BOOK BUY

If people want to suggest books/videos/dvds/resources to buy at the next

All workshops will be happening in the Out on Campus Lounge – TC 314N – in
the Rotunda above the bust stop. Please email Jeffrey_hayes@sfu.ca if you
are interested. All workshops count towards Office Volunteer training and
Peer Support training.

6. POSTER RUN

Out on Campus needs people to POSTER!
We have lots of beautiful posters for lovely events.
Drop by the Out on Campus lounge to look at the bright colours and feel the
glossiness before grabbing a bunch and sticking them somewhere where lots of
people will see them.

7. DOOR ACCESS

Jeff will be changing the door code as per Collective’s direction. Jeff will
be sending an email out with more details.

8. AFTER HOURS – NO TALENT SHOW NOV. 15th

The After Hours Café is having an event – a No Talent Show – Tuesday
November 15th from 6:00pm-10:00pm. Throw your skills and inhibitions out the
door and do something wacky. No talent required.

9. COLLECTIVE MEETING TIME NEXT SEMESTER

Next semester’s Collective meeting time will be determined upon people
signing up at January Clubs’ Days. It was suggested that the meeting time
change every two weeks/month to accommodate a broader participation of
volunteers. If you have any suggestions about making Collective meetings
more inclusive please email jeffrey_hayes@sfu.ca.

in OOC doing two workshops for us. Everyone is welcome. The first workshop
from 12:30 to 2:00 PM is "Supporting People Who Have Been Sexually
Assaulted", and the second will be "Violence In Queer Relationships". Please

Thursday, November 14th from 12-4 (possibly earlier) OOC will be hosting a
vigil remembering our transgendered brothers and sisters who have been
murdered in the past year. This is a pre-event for the Transgender Day Of
Remembrance. In (outside) of the OOC space, Rm TC314N in the rotunda.

Sunday, November 20th is the Vancouver Transgender Day of Remembrance. 3:00
PM in front of the Carnegie Centre (Front-401 Main St). We will be marching
to SFU Harbour Centre (515 W. Hastings. Terasen Room #1800). Speakers
included are MP Libby Davies, and MP Bill Siskay. Films, Trans activist Tami
Starlight, readings, and open mic to follow. For more information you can

Button Making

You know that subversive remark you've always wanted to put on a button?
Well now you can do it.

Out On Campus is going to be making buttons this Monday (the 24th) from
12-3. We shall charge you but a mere 25 cents per button. It is up to you to
provide whatever design you want to put in the button. Pretty much any piece
of paper will do as long as it isn't insanely thick paper. There is only one
size of button. The portion of the design that shows up is a circle about
3cm in diameter. You materials of choice will need to be larger (maybe 5 or
6 cm across) in order to have it wrap around the back. The button maker
belongs to the SFSS and makes rather professional looking buttons.

There will be scissors, paper, and felts and some such for you to use. You
can also peruse our old magazines for a picture to splice into a button.

We're also trying to make buttons for Out On Campus so bring along any
design ideas for that.

1) Rounds, Roles.
The rounds question of the day was concerning cannibalism. There was some
vibrant discussion.

2) Committee Updates.
There are committees, and they are doing work.
-Jeff is forwarding contacts to Karl for the Website committee.
-Veronique let the group know that the T-Shirt committee has someone working
on a design for the OOC T-shirts.
-The Library Committee is back up and running on Tuesdays after collective.

3) Coming Out Discussion Groups
We will have a coming out discussion group this month, or next. There will
be one a semester. Materials for past coming out discussion groups are in
the file cabinet. Jeff will do an e-mail out for volunteers.

4) SAFER Workshops.
SAFER is going to provide our crisis intervention workshops for free, and we
will have dates next week. New volunteers and volunteers interested in peer
support are encouraged to attend.

5) CJSF
CJSF has asked us if we want to do a radio show once a month. The group
twinkled on it, and it was a resounding YES! Jeff will contact CJSF and see
when volunteer training is. Lyndsay and Terry expressed interest in
volunteering.

6) Halloween Party
Wanli sent Jeff an e-mail asking for $150 for the Halloween Party. The group
twinkled on it, and it was agreed upon. Veronique spoke to this item. The
Halloween party will be on Friday, October 28th.

7) OOC in Convo Mall
It was agreed that we will be providing hot chocolate. Everyone is excited!
The theme for OOC goes OOC is hats. You must wear a hat of some kind; funny
hats are not only encouraged but are expected. If you show up without a
hat—one may be provided for you.

8) Peer Support Team
Peer Support Training will be the beginning of November. Jeff does the PST
training, and members of the PST are asked to volunteer in the training.

9) Library Inventory
The library inventory is cancelled. No one could show up because of mid
terms.

10) Consensus Training Workshop
The Women’s Centre is sponsoring a CONSENSUS 101 workshop on Wednesday,
October 19th from 11:30 – 1:30 in MBC2290. OOC can have up to 6 volunteers
attend. The workshop counts towards volunteer training.

11) Additions

-TDOR post rally discussion will be in the Terasen Theatre. The theatre we
wanted was booked for a convention. The organizers know and are okay with
this.

-The E-mail Coordinator position has gone to the BU. A hiring committee has
been struck (we will need a student to volunteer). Jeff’s job description
was amended to include that he will be their supervisor.

-Eric put forward the idea that it is time to have a button making party.
Most likely after midterms. We will have snacks that are conducive to
healthy button making.

1. Rounds, roles:

2. Book launch:
When: October 11th (Tues), 12-2pm
Where: Out On Campus
Jeff will rearrange the furniture (which he needs some volunteer help with) in order to allow the space to accommodate about 30 people. Jeff needed the approval from collective to grant him $50 (which will come from “socials”) to get some refreshments for the event. Collective twinkled on this.

3. After Hours Café:
Both Jeff and Erica haven’t heard anything from Emily. The After Hours launch will be postponed for a week. It should be launched the Tuesday after the book launch, October 11th, since it’s more feasible to do so. If anyone is interested in helping out, please let Erica know.

4. Committee updates:
Website committee: Jeff hasn’t heard anything from them.
Halloween party committee: Wanli and Veronique will speak on this matter, come up with a financial proposal for the party and bring it to the next collective.
Pub night committee: Wanli and Wynde have agreed to help Mike.
Celebrities Night: Lindsay has been in contact with Celebrities (“Queer Students Unite @ Celebrities Student Social in association with various on campus groups). It will be held on the first Friday of every month from 8-10pm. These are the parameters if we would like to do a social there: 1. Celebrities would like to post the OOC logo on their advertisement (admission is free for all queer students with a valid student ID-includes entrance to club night after the social) 2. We would need to print 20 to 30 posters once a month.
Discussion: Do we want our logo to be associated with the corporation? Erica brought up the SFSS Corporate Affiliations Policy:
1. The affiliation should be beneficial to students.
2. The corporation needs to be ethically sound
3. There should be considerable flexibility in pulling out if need be
There’s no need to follow these requirements strictly, but it should be something we as a club should consider carefully.
Another issue is the fact that we might need someone to do a poster run once a month. We can get a staff person to do that, or we can do it ourselves.
Conclusion: Lindsay will keep us updated, this matter can wait.

T-shirt committee: The committee has yet to have a meeting. They are in contact with CJSF, who are also getting T-shirts and we might be able to get a discount.

5. S.A.F.E.R. workshop: At the last collective, we’ve decided that the crisis centre is too expensive. S.A.F.E.R. has agreed to do a crisis intervention workshop around late October / early November for FREE. Jerry Stochanski will be holding the workshop. However, they would like as many people as possible to attend the workshop (at least 15, or anywhere from 20 to 30 people). We might need to open it to the general public then. Jeff would like volunteers or anyone out there to attend the workshop!!

6. OOC in Convocation Mall:
Byron has booked Convocation Mall for October 25, Tuesday, 9am to 5pm.
It will be held on the same day as the Muslim students association’s event there. We can have collective meetings there. Jeff needs volunteers to bring everything (furniture) back to the space after the event. Jeff will e-mail the list for volunteers. Wynde and Claire have agreed to help out. Jeff will also think up a financial proposal (for hot chocolate or cider) and bring it back to collective next week.

7. A.S.I.A. workshops:
There will be 3 workshops – 1.Sexual/self-esteem 2. HIV 101 3.Anti-racism/cultural sensitivity
The money will come from Honoraria. They will be held at the end of October or early November. These workshops are really good for volunteer training.

8. Secret Friends:
Secret Friends have started again, for the fall. The sign-up sheet is in the space. The secret friends list from the summer semester has been revealed and is up at OOC.
Discussion: There needs to be a newly assigned area for secret friends. The current situation is not sustainable! Jeff made a suggestion to hang a fishing line and use clips to hold the lunch bags. Karl suggested we might want to look for something more re-usable, since it’s done every semester, using and throwing away lunch bags is just too wasteful. Suggestions were made: stockings or shoeboxes could be used instead!!

9. D.G.S. workshop funding:
So far, 2 people have e-mailed Jeff about attending the Dirty Gender Secrets workshop. It’s a 3-day conference that will take place from the 21st to the 23rd of October. If there are any other requests to attend the workshop, they should be submitted by Friday. People interested in attending the workshop will need to pre-register on their own.

10. Book Buy/ Inventory:
We need to set a date for the book buy. However, before we do the book buy, we need to do an inventory for the library. Jeff would need 5 -10 volunteers to help out with this. It will be scheduled for October 13th (Thurs). The library committee came in after last week’s collective and did some organization and made some calls for resources that have been taken out. We’re unsure if they want to stay around and be on the library committee, it might be a better idea if interested new volunteers started up a new committee to help instead. Jeff will send out an e-mail. Wynde and Claire have agreed to help. We will figure out a date for the book buy after the inventory is done.

11. Additions:

a. Next week, we need to move collective due to the book launch. Collective twinkled on moving next week’s collective to Thursday, October 13th from 12.30 to 2pm.
b. SFSS Cinema is showing “The Shawshank Redemption” on Thursday at 4.30pm
c. Colouring Book Fundraiser @ Lick, Friday, October 21st. It starts at 9pm. Members of OOC will be performing/participating, so do come out and support the event!
d. There’s a Board of directors meeting at 5pm today in MBC. If anyone is interested in knowing how the student union works, they should come and sit in. The meeting is open to the public.

Trans Coming Out Group at The Centre

"TRANS OUT"

Trans Coming Out Group

An 8 week peer facilitated discussion & support group for self-identified
transgender people.

This will be a small closed group of 8-10 participants facilitated by
two Centre facilitators who identify as transgender.

Group discussion themes will include:

Ø identity at work, school, in the community

Ø identity related to family and friends

Ø relationships and dating

Ø passing and appearance

Ø hormones and voice

Ø surgery and prosthetics

Ø resources and support

The group is free, however registration is required. The facilitators
will call you to set-up a 15 minute contact meeting to provide you
with more information about the group and allow you to ask questions.

15 minute contact meetings take place Wednesday October 19th 7-9pm
Group runs Wednesdays Oct. 26th to Dec 14th, 7-9pm

It was agreed that we will be providing hot chocolate. Everyone is excited! The theme for OOC goes OOC is hats. You must wear a hat of some kind; funny hats are not only encouraged but are expected. If you show up without a hat—one may be provided for you.

8) Peer Support Team
Peer Support Training will be the beginning of November. Jeff does the PST training, and members of the PST are asked to volunteer in the training.

9) Library Inventory
The library inventory is cancelled. No one could show up because of mid terms.

10) Consensus Training Workshop
The Women’s Centre is sponsoring a CONSENSUS 101 workshop on Wednesday, October 19th from 11:30 – 1:30 in MBC2290. OOC can have up to 6 volunteers attend. The workshop counts towards volunteer training.

11) Additions

-TDOR post rally discussion will be in the Terasen Theatre. The theatre we wanted was booked for a convention. The organizers know and are okay with this.

-The E-mail Coordinator position has gone to the BU. A hiring committee has been struck (we will need a student to volunteer). Jeff’s job description was amended to include that he will be their supervisor.

-Eric put forward the idea that it is time to have a button making party. Most likely after midterms. We will have snacks that are conducive to healthy button making.

Pink Blood: Homophobic Violence in Canada Book Launch at OOC

On Tuesday, October 11th, Out on Campus SFU will be hosting Douglas Victor
Janoff, author of Pink Blood: Homophobic Violence in Canada, in support of
his Canadian book tour. Between Oct. 7 and Oct. 17, Janoff will visit
Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg. Full
details are available at www.pinkblood.ca. The event will be from 12:00 PM
to 2:00 PM, which will include a presentation followed by a question and
answer, in room TC 314N in the rotunda. Refreshments will be served.

Pink Blood, recently published by the University of Toronto Press, is the
first Canadian book on violence against the gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered community. The book analyzes 120 homicides and more than 350
gay-bashings that have occurred in Canada since 1990.

“The violence is pervasive and a real threat to our lives,” says Janoff, an
Ottawa-based policy manager for the federal government who began his
research ten years ago.

“Even though gay marriage is legal in this country, legal equality does not
equal social equality.”

Pink Blood is an investigation into Canada’s “blood-stained legacy of
extreme violence, ineffective legislation, police brutality and official
indifference,” according to the UN-based International Centre for the
Prevention of Crime.

The book tour, organized by a coalition of community groups, unions, and
campus organizations and departments, will include book readings and
signings. Victims, activists and community members will be speaking out
against homophobic violence.

More than 200 people have already attended summer book launches in Toronto,
Ottawa and Montreal. The cities and dates of the western tour are below.

Hello Folks,

This is what is going on for the next two weeks.

-Don't forget that today is the Trans Awareness Panel Discussion in the
Women's Centre from 3:15-4:30 in TC 313. The Women's Centre is open to
all genders during this discussion. It was asked that you RRSP, so I hope
that you have.

-The next Collective Meeting will be Tuesday, October 4th from 12:30 to
2:00 PM. The agenda will be sent out later today.

-The next two group Volunteer Orientations will be on Wednesday October 5th
from 12:30 to 2:00 PM, and Thursday October 6th from 10:30 to 12PM. Come
learn how to be a volunteer with OOC, the benefits are endless.

-A tentative Coming Out Discussion Group is scheduled for Thursday October
6th from 2PM to 4PM. If no one shows up to, I will be hanging out on the
couch by myself. Come hang out with me!

1. OOC Goes OOC
There was some discussion surrounding doing outreach in Convo Mall, moving
Out On Campus out of the space and into a high visibility area.
Historically, this has happened once a semester. Collective agreed it was a
good idea, and so it is. We will do so within the last two weeks in October
for one day. Jeff will check to see what days are available to book Convo
mall.

2. Anti-Sexual Violence Workshops
OOC will be hosting a two-part workshop on Anti-Sexual Violence, which will
be facilitated by Lisa of SASC-AMS/UBC. The first component will be on
supporting survivors of sexual violence who may access the space through
peer support or otherwise. The second component will address specifically
queer violence in relationships. Both workshops will count towards training
for new volunteers! Discussion included opening up the workshops to other
people in the community, including women who access the Women’s Centre,
general students, etc. The amount of people we can include in the workshops
will be based on how many people the facilitators feel comfortable training.
OOC will provide the facilitators on honorarium based on previously agreed
upon acceptable honorarium amounts.

3. Anti-Oppression Workshops
Discussion around what other anti-oppression workshops OOC would like to
host, or bring facilitators in to do for us. Priorities were placed on doing
anti-racist/anti-sexist material combined. Other ideas the collective
highlighted were ableism, sex positive, body positive, and body image/fat
oppression/disordered eating workshops as part of our commitment to
anti-oppression education within the collective, and broader community.
Jeff will continue to work on this, and is in discussion with other service
co-ordinators to work on workshops that address gender/sexism/race/and class
issues collectively.

4. Crisis Intervention Training
The Crisis Centre workshops are too expensive for our needs. Jeff will
contact S.A.F.E.R., and other peer driven services to see how they access
crisis intervention training and what they have felt worked best for them.

5. Library Committee
There are seriously overdue books, and people in attendance were not sure if
there were active members of the LC. Collective agreed that a priority for
trained volunteers who can keep the space open would contact library users
and let them know that they have overdue books/resources.

There was some discussion as to whether or not the current system is
working. We decided that we don’t really know, so we will revisit this when
we do. It may be a good idea to do a library inventory before the next book
buy to know where we are at, and highlight anything we may have lost as
important re-purchases. There are new volunteers willing to volunteer for
the library, so after new volunteer orientations that can happen.

6. Website Committee
A website committee has been struck! Jeff will follow up Thursday.

7. Collective Meeting Time
It was agreed that Tuesdays 12:30 to 2:00 PM is best. Anyone who is not able
to attend are encouraged to forward collective items or concerns to Jeff, or
to the general OOC e-mail list.

8. Furniture
The peer support room will need furniture. There was some discussion that
this would be most important once the room was done, and we had a peer
support team again. Lindsay has taken pictures of furniture we can get for
free from FAC/MAN, and the pictures are on the PC.

9. Halloween Party
A Halloween Party will be held in the OOC space on Friday, October 28th and
it will be quite fun. Wanli, Veronique, Erica, and Jeff will be the
Halloween Party Committee. It will possibly be a fun beverages and cheese
party, and will most likely involve Halloween, and queer, themes.

10. Pub Night Off Campus
Mike wants to organise a Pub night off campus. There was some discussion
around whether or not it would be once a week, twice a month, or once a
month. The Pub Night Off Campus night will need more volunteers to strike a
committee (at least two more). If you would like to volunteer let us know.

Celebrities inter-campus queer night was brought up. No new information to
report from anyone at the meeting.

11. T-Shirts
Out on Campus is clearly dedicated to developing new T-shirts. Discussion
around t-shirts was whether or not t-shirts would be purchased on a cost
recovery basis, sold for cheaper to OOC volunteers (cost absorbed by OOC),
or on what terms they would be acquired. It was agreed that we would only
accept a very high standard of cool t-shirts. We would most likely purchase
them from Best Buy t-shirts who use union and anti-sweat shop materials.
Enthusiastically, Jamie, Veronique, and Mallory agreed to be the T-shirt
committee.

12. Dirty Gender Secrets
The Dirty Gender Secrets Conference is October 21-23 at the Video in
Studios. Collective members were encouraged to volunteer or participate.
Collective agreed to donate $100 to the Dirty Gender Secrets organisers to
help cover fees related to childcare, accessibility, food, etc. The
collective agreed to also finance 5-10 OOC volunteers to attend either of
the workshops should they choose, to a maximum of $100 total.

13. SFSS AGM

Collective was reminded that the AGM was tomorrow (September 28, 2005) and
that it was important for students to attend. The OOC centre will close at
4:15PM to support the AGM.

14. After Hours Café
The After Hours Café is returning! The committee is Emily, Erica, and two
other students who were not in attendance. Tentatively, the first After
Hours will be on Tuesday, October 11th at 6:30PM. Collective agreed to
increase the After Hours Budget fifteen dollars a week to a total of $40
dollars a week. Any additional costs for the first after hours event will be
brought to collective next week. General consensus was that this was, once
again, very exciting.

15. Drag King Bake Sale
In the next two weeks there will be a bake sale to support drag kings going
to the Drag King Conference in Winnipeg.

The meeting was adjourned, after we agreed that Erica will be next weeks
facilitator.

Pride 2005: No turning back

The Pride parade 2005 was a fun-filled, aestheically tantalising and exciting event. SFU's Out On Campus was honoured to have been able to march with the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), who had a pretty strong presence in the parade. The theme was "geeky chic": think buddy holly glasses, button ups, ties and khakis (with the exception of a few fabulously original individuals). Our banner said "SFU's OUT ON CAMPUS, COME AS YOU ARE", an intentional lyrical rip-off of the 'Nirvana' hit symbolising inclusion and acceptance as opposed to marginalization.

Here's a big 'Thank You'going out to all the volunteers who took the time to march in the parade and those who did the necessary preparations before the parade.

Stand Proud. There's no turning back.

Decision-making Structure:
The Out on Campus Collective uses a consensus decision-making structure. Communications

There are a couple different ways to get in touch with and stay in touch with Out On Campus. The simplest is come to the office which is located at TC 314 above the bus stop. We do our best to be open from 10-4 five days a week. Failing that, you can call us at 604. 291. 5933. Either way you will get in touch with a volunteer who will hopefully be able to answer your questions or give you the contact info of someone who can.

Most of the actual communication between OOC volunteers is done over e-mail. To facilitate this, we operate two main e-mail lists.

out-on-campus-news@sfu.ca is the condensed list. People on this list receive no more than two e-mails a week. One is the minutes from our collective meetings (the decision making body of OOC). The other is a short summary of everything we are dong that week. That way you will know everything about what OOC is doing. All e-mails come from the e-mail coordinator.

out-on-campus@sfu.ca is the big list. On this list you will get everything from the condensed list and a whole lot more. Anyone on this list can send e-mail to the rest of the list. This way you will find out about a lot of non-OOC queer events going on. Occasionally you'll also get news from around the world concerning queer people, people looking for room-mates, or people inviting you to wild parties.

The Simon Fraser Student Society is seeking applicants for the permanent position of the Out on Campus Coordinator. Out on Campus is Simon Fraser University’s Queer (GBLT*) Centre, operated by the Out on Campus Collective and funded by the Simon Fraser Student Society. This position is a permanent position, and the employee will be a member of CUPE Local 2396.
Applicants must demonstrate experience with peer support, as well as skills and experience in project and volunteer coordination, volunteer recruitment, with the ability to administer a Queer center with +900 titles in its resource library. Also, experience in a consensus decision-making model is an asset.
The position is 28hr/week. The pay rate is 24.80/hr with a periodic COLA adjustment, and comes with a full benefit package. The start date is August 22nd, and the deadline for applications is Thursday August 11th at 11:00pm. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

Secret Friends is a fun little program that runs every semester.
It's a lot like Secret Santa: each participant is assigned a friend, and your job is to give your friend a little something to cheer them up and make them feel good while keeping your identity a secret. You, ofcourse, is also assigned to a secret person and they will do the same to you. Near the end of the semester all secret friends will be revealed and doughnuts will also be involved.
Sounds kinda confusing? It's really not. Just come in to the space at the beginning of each semester and join the oh-so-fun game while meeting oh-so-lovely people! It's also a great excuse for you to come into the oh-so-comfortable space and procrastinate ;)

-volunteer orientations
-secret friends (community building/fun get-to-know-you)

-two volunteers won Xtra West Community Hero awards!
-workshop with YMCA international youth
-organizing and maintaining our library of about 900+ resources
-planning for Fall Orientation, where 2500 new students arrive at SFU
-liason work with the Women's Centre + other groups in Vancouver

There are approximately 30-40 volunteers working with Out on Campus a semester. With a budget of around $65 000 a year (including unionized wages for staff), we try to balance outreach, education, advocacy, peer support, discussions, and socials for the SFU population. We also fund an annual bursary through SFU Financial Aid, awarding money to any SFU student who has worked on reducing homophobia or transphobia in their work. We aim to do a great deal of coalition and co-sponsorship of events.

Information will be posted here as soon as possible about our collective process, volunteer orientation information, safe space policies + anti-oppression framework, and more- including the calendar for 2005's biggest Queer Awareness Week yet: 10 events in 5 days, ending with the 6th annual cabaret night that attracted 280 people.

Homegrown Ginger

Out On Campus is putting on a film screening soon. It is called Homegrown Ginger and it is a selection of short films which explore race and sexuality. It is assured to be thought provoking. All are encouraged to attend.

QAW 2005= 38 volunteers + 10 events/5 days + 5 panelists + 1 peak news editor + 1 xtra west photographer + 2 pub managers + 20-something painted banners + 3000 leaflets + 5 extraordinary quad books staff + 9 drag show acts + 1 drag queen virgin + 280 pub attendees + 150 silenced protesters + too many cheap cookies + 1 makeup artist + 400 emails + so, so, so many cups of coffee.

Queer Awareness Week March 7-11

Monday March 7: OOC GOES OUT ON CAMPUS: stop by convo mall and enjoy hot
chocolate all day. Our comfy couches might have you hanging out longer than
you expected.

Monday: FAT OPPRESSION WORKSHOP: Different than body image, fat oppression
has to do with a larger system of oppression within society. Come learn
about the language and systems surrounding fat oppression/fat-phobia and the
experiences of people who face it. 2:30pm-5:00pm in the Out on Campus
Lounge.

Tuesday: TRANS 101 WORKSHOP: Do you want to expand your ideas about gender?
Roz Shakespeare, a retired police officer, will give a dynamic talk about
her personal experiences transitioning on the job. 1:30-3pm in 2290 MBC.

Tuesday: The weekly AFTER HOURS CAFE is a warm and friendly environment for
all queer people and allies. Have some coffee and a veggie sandwich and meet
new people. 6-10pm at OOC’s lounge.

Wednesday: QUEERING THE CAMPUS art project... look around you!

Thursday: “DEMYSTIFYING THE QUEER” PANEL. You always wondered who are the
queers beyond ‘Will and Grace’ and ‘The L-word’. Come and listen to our very
diverse panelists. MBC 2296, 2-4pm.

Friday: Annual DAY OF SILENCE PROTEST. Hundreds of students will participate
in this anti-homophobia action. By staying silent we speak for millions.

Friday: DRAG AND CABARET SHOW in the pub! Your favourite Vancouver and SFU
performers return for the 3rd annual show. Doors at 9, show at 10pm. Cover
$3-10.
